Sleep consists of roughly 1/3 of our life. The purpose of it is to refuel you so you have enough energy for the next day. Here are some quick hacks to help you:

#1 – Keep your bedroom as a strict quarters for sleeping. This will condition your mind to fall asleep faster. Shut off all the lights and electronics. Don’t stay on the phone in your bed, watch TV, or read (unless it’s a boring book). You don’t want stimulation at this time.

#2 – Sleep with the shades open. When the light hits your face, the endorphins will start kicking in sooner. Your body has a natural circadian rhythm that falls in line with light and darkness. Use it to your advantage.

#3 – 6 hours of sleep as opposed to 8 will provide you with an extra month of waking time per year. 8 has been shown to be optimal for fitness, especially if you train hard, but I notice that most CEO’s claim to sleep under 6 and I have found that 6 is plenty for me. See if it works for you.

#4 – If you have trouble falling asleep at night, a few techniques that work are to have some hot decaf tea, focus on something you don’t want to do, and repeat a long phrase over and over again while in bed. You should get drowsy.

#5 – Visualize what time you want to wake up before you go to sleep. Do this by closing your eyes and mentally imprinting the numbers on your forehead for 30 seconds. You have an internal clock. You’ll be so surprised at how accurate this is.

#6 – As soon as you wake up or hear the alarm, get out of bed immediately. Sleeping an extra 20 minutes will not give you more energy. You’ll have to get up eventually, so just roll out of bed and start jumping on your heels or drinking water to activate your central nervous system.

#7 – There’s no such thing as a night owl or a morning person. The early bird gets the worm, so you will have more opportunities if you prep before you go into work as opposed to rushing. Let the Ferrari warm up. Getting up earlier is a matter of discipline, not who you were born as. We don’t find ourselves in life as much as we create ourselves.
