Anakin Skywalker and Master Yoda sit down and have a beautiful conversation about detachment in Episode 3.

Let me show you how it goes down.

YODA: Premonitions . . . premonitions . . . Hmmmm . . . these visions you have . . .

ANAKIN: They are of pain, suffering, death . . .

YODA: Yourself you speak of, or someone you know?

ANAKIN: Someone . . .

YODA: . . . close to you?

ANAKIN: Yes.

YODA: Careful you must be when sensing the future, Anakin. The fear of loss is a path to the dark side.

ANAKIN: I won’t let these visions come true, Master Yoda.

YODA: Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them, do not. Miss them, do not. Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed, that is.

ANAKIN: What must I do, Master Yoda?

YODA: Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.

Now this may seem ridiculous. Don’t mourn your loved ones..? High intelligence knows life lives on. A soul gives a body life. Not the other way around. The body certainly dies, but the soul goes on.

This is not about being emotionless. Just the opposite. We don’t want to connect to negative emotions though, so usually you will have to numb yourself to what’s going on to eventually get to a place of love and joy, positive emotions.

Fear entraps us from understanding the truth.

You must let go of the fear of losing something, in order to truly love it.

Otherwise it’s just desiring it out of fear of losing it.

The only way up is to actually let go. For then and only then, you can find its natural beauty. Don’t pick a flower if you love it, as many wise men said.

To acquire something that’s been evading you, you must let go of the attachment of NEEDING to have it.

You must rid of your fear of not having it. And NOT for the sake of getting it. Then, it’s just filling the attachment. You have to let go of any attachment. What would your life look like without possessing this thing? You’ll recognize that life will still go on and you’ll readjust. It may not be as pretty initially, but eventually it would become your new normal. And then it perhaps seems life magically has a funny way of working out in which it gives you the thing you desired, when you no longer actually need it.

Not fearing is not being naive from bad stuff happening. It could.

It’s not caving into fear even if something were to happen, because you could get through it if you had to.
